I grew up surrounded by bipolar liars — my parents, my grandparents, aunts, cousins — my sisters — and I have told more than my own share of lies. So is lying a symptom of bipolar disorder? Lying does NOT appear in any list of bipolar disorder symptoms. In that strict sense, it is not part of the clinical criteria. However, many of us have had life experiences that lead us to conclude there is a definite connection between bipolar and lying. Why is this so? Well, for starters, everybody lies! In this post, however, I want to discuss something very specific: Love, as an emotional state, can be extremely powerful, even for people without bipolar disorder. At the end of the day, this creates some special challenges for those of us with bipolar disorder when it comes to love. I want to look at some of the specific ways that bipolar disorder complicates love and provide some tips for dealing with those complications.
An individual with BPD has a fear of abandonment. Individuals with BPD have a history of brief and intensive relationships that ended prematurely and badly.
The drug works by leveling out certain neurotransmitters — in effect inhibitting the more extreme moods associated with psychotic disorders. Unlike antipsychotics of the past, Abilify acts as a partial agonist to dopamine receptors, rather than a full agonist like previous antipsychotic drugs. This makes it a markedly safer alternative to standard antipsychotics.
